Hair Help!!!

Sometimes, well, things happen! Below are a few of the, “Help me!” topics we hear from frantic moms and dads. If you need further information or if your topic isn't covered here, please just give us a call. We would be happy to help!

Q: My young child hates having a haircut and starts screaming when we walk in the door. What should I do?
A: Let the salon/stylist know when you make the appointment that your child has a difficult time. If you know what it is that bothers him/her (scared, hates clippers, etc.) that information is extremely useful too. At Whipper-Snippers we suggest bringing in your little one about 10-15 minutes early to allow them time to play and get comfortable with the environment. We will also have the stylist spend some time with your child either playing or reading a story about getting haircuts before transitioning to the styling chair. After that we will work together with you to create a successful experience. In rare occasions we may simply need to reschedule for a different day, but even getting your little one used to the salon and the idea of a haircut can be an important step!

Q: My child cut their own hair! What should I do now?
A: First of all, don't worry-- hair grows back! Call us and let us know what's going on... we'll get you in as soon as possible! Don't try to do the fix yourself; the more hair remaining the better the stylist can work with you. Our approach will include a consult with you to identify just what damage was done and what options are available. Once you decide on an approach together the stylist can get to work creating your child's new and improved haircut.

Q: My child has gum in their hair. What can I do?
A: We recommend one of the following two options. First, put ice in a plastic bag and apply to hair until gum hardens. Break the gum out of the hair, repeating as necessary until entirely removed. Second, use canola or olive oil to saturate the gum and surrounding hair. Let sit for 20 minutes then comb out. Gum should slip out of hair fairly easily, but repeat as needed especially on longer hair.

Q: Help! My child has lice and I don't know what to do next!
A: Whipper-Snippers carries a Hair Emergency Kit just for lice treatment. It includes: a pesticide-free lice elimination product, metal combs for the most effective nit and egg removal, clips to keep hair separated and easier to section and work through. For the rest of the family the kit includes Circle of Friends Lice Free Zone preventative shampoo and conditioner to avoid spreading the lice. This kit has everything you need in one place. Call us and we'll have it ready for you to swing by and pick up to start treatment just as soon as possible. Follow your physician's advice regarding laundering and cleaning your home and car for most effective removal.

When your child is lice-free once again, continue to use Circle of Friends Lice Free Zone shampoo and conditioner a minimum of once a week to ensure they stay lice free!

Q: My child's hair tends to dry out and discolor when they spend a lot of time in the pool. How can I help this?
A:If your child's hair is already damaged from the chlorine we recommend Original Sprouts Deep Conditioner to restore moisture and a healthy balance to the hair. As a preventative measure, using Circle of Friends Pre-Swim Conditioner BEFORE getting into the pool will saturate the hair and minimize it's ability to absorb pool water, limiting the potential damage and discoloration.

Q: My preteen seems to have dirty or greasy looking hair no matter how often he/she shampoos. What can I do?
A: Hormones are a major contributor to excess oil production for preteen and teen children. The best bet to cut through the oil build up is a clarifying shampoo. We recommend Circle of Friends Swimmer's Shampoo as a clarifier. Following up with just a light conditioner or skipping the conditioning step and using only a spray detangler for stubborn spots will help keep hair
looking healthy but not weighed down.
